Students Compete In Regional Spelling Bee
After two hours of competition, one home schooled seventh grader won the West Tennessee Regional Spelling Bee. Claire Layne beat Clarksburg’s Madison McClure and more than thirty other competitors from thirty-three West Tennessee schools with the word “excessive” after thirty-seven rounds. Layne said, “There’s one I wasn’t really sure how it was pronounced. I always pronounced it the word grapple, and he pronounced some words differently and the tone. I just crossed my fingers hoping to get that one.” She will now go to nationals in Washington D.C later this year.
