Legislators Consider Banning Animals in Driver’s Lap

Tennessee legislators are considering putting an end to dog distractions in a moving vehicle. The bill proposes that no person operating a motor vehicle in motion would be allowed to drive with an animal in their lap. The argument is that it can be a distraction to the driver. Animals would still be allowed to ride in the back seat…or even in the passenger side of a car. However, some dog owners do not think the government should regulate where man’s best friend rides. “There are issues I think the government should control.. texting and driving, drinking and driving, the seat belt law. But I feel like my companion, which is my dog, ought to be where I want her. If she wants to be in my lap, I want her in my lap,” said dog owner Alisa Melton. The House is expected to discuss the bill next Thursday.
