Trooper Injured In Interstate Crash
Knoxville police say a state trooper is in critical condition after a commercial truck plowed into his cruiser on the shoulder of Interstate 40.
The officer’s name wasn’t immediately released after the crash early Tuesday on westbound Interstate 40 on the city’s west side.
The Knoxville News Sentinel (http://bit.ly/zH8RkE ) quoted police spokesman Darrell DeBusk, who said the cruiser burst into flames and road flares and ammunitions stored in the trunk began exploding.
The trooper was pulled from the car unresponsive by a city police officer and an emergency medical services worker after the crash occurred shortly before 3 a.m. EDT. The EMS worker received burns to his hands during the rescue.
The westbound lanes of I-40 were closed for about five hours, but reopened at 7:30 a.m.
