Thousands of Dollars in Damage Done to Beech River Airport
A local airport is having to clean up from thousands of dollars worth of vandalism on the runway committed over the weekend, while law enforcement wants to find who is responsible. Beech River Regional Airport officials discovered someone had taken out two of the vehicles on their property and taken them out on the runway. The intruders ran over and destroyed five taxiway lights, a taxiway sign, and put several ruts along the runway. They even went into one of the hangers and tampered with an airplane on site. The airport’s executive director John Jeter told 7 Eyewitness News there have been multiple reports of vandalism on the property in the last three months, and he wants those responsible to be held accountable. “It’s frustrating that we try to do a good job out here and keep the airport looking nice and somebody comes in here and do something so foolish,” said Jeter. Henderson County Sheriff Department investigators told 7 Eyewitness News they have fingerprints and DNA of the people who broke in. They said they could face charges of vandalism, theft of a vehicle, and burglary.
