THP to Increase Enforcement for St. Patrick’s Weekend
St. Patrick’s Day is Saturday and in preparation for this weekend’s holiday celebrations the Tennessee Highway Patrol is gearing up for its statewide DUI enforcement campaign. More than 50 sobriety license checkpoints are planned across the state. In Tennessee, three people were killed during the 2011 St. Patrick’s Day holiday period, one fatality was alcohol-related. There were 99 crash fatalities nationwide on the holiday back in 2010. Out of that number, 24 people were killed in traffic crashes that involved at least one driver with a blood alcohol level of .08 or higher. “Plan ahead, go have fun, do what you want, but have a plan,” said Lt. Brad Wilbanks of the Tennessee Highway Patrol. “Have someone to give you a ride home, have a taxi, have something in mind, but don’t drink and drive, it’s not worth it.” The 2012 St. Patrick’s Day holiday period begins at Midnight, Saturday March 17 and ends at Midnight on Sunday, March 18.
