Councilmen Encourage Voter ID Education

A new voter empowerment program with the mission of educating Madison County voters on the importance of voting was unveiled, Thursday. The announcement was made outside of the Madison County Election Commission Office in west Jackson. Madison County Voter Empowerment was founded by Councilmen Earnest Brooks, Scott Conger and Johnny Dodd and is a non-partisan, non-denominational coalition of elected officials and civic organizations. The group said its main goal is to inform voters about the state’s new photo I.D. law. Currently, 31 states require voters to show some form of I.D. at the polls. 15 states, including Tennessee hav enacted some of the strictest photo I.D. laws in the nation. “Poor people, the elderly even disabled people just won’t have access, so we are here to help those different constituent groups in order to exercise the most important right we have as Americans,” said Councilman Ernest Brooks. ”
