A public forum dealing with earthquakes in West Tennessee was held Friday by the University of Memphis at Lambuth. The forum addressed the history of earthquakes as well as the potential for seismic activity in West Tennessee. While a major earth quake has not occurred in our area in more than 200 years, experts said the potential for one can not be ignored. “It’s unprecedented we don’t understand it scientifically, yet at the end of the day we know big earthquakes have occurred repeatedly here and will probably occur in the future, said Gary Patterson of the West Tennessee Safety Commission. “Mostly we are reaching out to the policy makers to understand that we need to coordinate our efforts before it happens and most of them are especially in Tennessee, so we have got a leg up on a lot of the other states, in that we are coordinating these events before it happens. West Tennessee sits on the New Madrid fault line, which potentially threatens seven states.
