Sheriff’s Dept. Confiscates Counterfeit $100’s
Police said a large amount of counterfeit money was circulating West Tennessee; with small businesses, banks, and convenience stores being at risk. Investigators said the next 24 hours were crucial, predicting the makers of the fake money would try and get rid of the the cash fast. Chief Investigator Steaven Joy said the counterfeit money was some of the best he had ever seen. The Hardeman County Sheriff’s Department was notified on Wednesday of a slew of money that was thrown out of a car that was driving in Bolivar, but this money was counterfeit. Close to $400 were found, all in $100 bills. Investigator Joy said they are more than happy to toss that money out for them, so local businesses would npt have to deal with the headache of fake money. “Just go by the texture of the feel of the bill. Most of the time I look at the bill from the front and I look at the height of the whiteness all the way around the outside of the bill,” stated Investigator Joy. “Real bills will have a straight square all the way around, that you can usually tell if someone has cut the bill with scissors. Different coloration is also a big giveaway, counterfeit money will not be the “money green. You can’t see the double face, a hundred-dollar bill usually you can see the double face come through,” said Joy. One of the most common ways to check for counterfeit money is to hold the bill up to the light and check for the vertical band marked with the bills currency. “My biggest concern is people taking it lightly, because what they really have to think about is if they get a hundred dollar bill that goes through, they’re stuck with that hundred dollar bill and they’re loosing,” said Joy. Police are looking for the suspects responsible for making the counterfeit money.
