Scam artists have been targeting Crockett County. The Sheriff’s Department is investigating several incidents in recent weeks. An elderly woman recently walked the BancorpSouth Bank in Alamo and was denied a large request for cash. “First she tells us she has met this gentleman at the post office and that he is going to make her a millionaire. She has already given him $1,000 and she needs to send him $25,000 more and after discussing it with her later we discover that he is going to come to her house,” said Dottie Rinks BancorpSouth Bank V.P. “This lady, she could have lost several thousand dollars. She was very naive to what they were trying to do and trusted these people,” said Detective Andrew Whitehead of the Crockett County Sheriff’s Department. The Sheriff’s Department actually traced this scam back to Nashville and got Nashville Metro involved. It is an ongoing investigation there in the fraud division. “Another elderly lady I spoke with her on the phone and she advised me that she had just realized that she had been scammed in the process of this she had already sent out several different checks and they had wiped her bank account clean,” said Sgt. Allan Gilliland of the Crockett County Sheriff’s Department. The elderly in Crockett County have been targeted by phone, email and mail. Money is promised to them if they send information or money. “With computer technology nowadays the way things can be done numbers can be changed no telling where these people live,” Gilliland said.
