Saltillo To Expand And Beautify Riverfront
The city of Saltillo is making some changes to its riverfront area, which city leaders hope will bring more tourists to town, and boost their economy. Robert England said he already loves to fish at Saltillo Landing, but he would fish every day if he could if the riverfront gets a makeover. “A lot of people put in here, but there would be more if they had a floating dock so they could tie their boat up and everything,” England said. And that is the goal for city leaders. They recently signed a five-year lease with the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency for them to make improvements to its riverfront area – a project city leaders said they have been working on for the past several years. Officials said the improvements will make it easier for people to shop and eat in their town. “The Tennessee River is our most primary asset, and we’re looking forward to making it more user friendly to enhance the fishing and boating,” said Mayor Larry Lowery. The city just installed donated lights earlier this week. They also want to improve the boat ramp, add benches and stairs to get to the river, a floating dock, and a visitors’ center. “And we’re planning on doing restrooms, ’cause in the summertime and even in the spring, this parking lot is full of boaters and all, there’s nowhere to go to the restroom, and we need it,” said Alderman Tom Sutherlen. City leaders said they hope the changes will make the area something residents can be proud of. Mayor Lowery told 7 Eyewitness News he estimates the cost of the project to be between $60,000 to $100,000. He said grants, fundraisers, and help from the county should cover the cost of the improvements.
