Watching his Kindergarten class at St. Mary’s Catholic School, Ron Abernathy is a long way from the Final Four. His young students do not know their teacher was the Associate Head Coach at LSU from 1976 to 1989. “In 1981 The Final Four was in Philadelphia and we lost to Indiana and Isiah Thomas. In 1986 The Final Four was in Dallas and we lost to Louisville,” said Ron Abernathy. This coming weekend Abernathy and his LSU Final Four teams from 1981 and 1986 will be honored by the U.S. Basketball Writer’s Association. He will attend the College All Star Game at the Super Dome, the Final Four games and the Coaches vs. Cancer Banquet. “When you go to the Final Four there is so much going on even at the games, it’s really a social setting. I look forward to doing that,” said Abernathy. Abernathy is a busy man. He coaches the boys and girls middle school teams. Last month the girls reached the district semifinals. “I think it’s very good. He’s one of the best people I know and this year he just yeah, he deserves it. He’s been thru so much and he’s helped so many people,” said student Anna Easley. “There was a video we saw one time about he was on the sidelines of LSU and how he coached at Lane,” student Jack Richardson said. Abernathy has the most wins in Lane College History. This is his first year as athletic director at St. Mary’s. “I really feel blessed to be here at this time in the season and I look forward to doing here at St. Mary’s what i did at LSU, ” said Abernathy. He plans on taking his wife and son to the Final Four.
