Some local high school students got somewhat of a wake up call on Monday, as they were able to experience what it feels like to drive under the influence. North Side High School students got to drive a specially designed go-cart that lets them feel the effects of impaired driving. Officials with the Madison County Juvenile Court System use a controller that can make the driver lose control with the click of a button. The go-cart is part of the SIDNE program or Simulated Impaired Driving Experience which the court system received through a state grant. Officials said they hope this will help local teens realize the dangers of driving under the influence. “We have control of the vehicle with the laser. We can put it on impaired mode. It kind of shows them what it’s like to drive impaired with their reaction times off, things like that. Just like anybody impaired would be,” said Madison County Juvenile Court System intern Aaron Daigle. Officials with the Madison County Juvenile Court System say they will provide the SIDNE program to any local groups free of charge.
