Street Named For King

A 3,700-foot section of a downtown Memphis street will be renamed Wednesday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., on the 44th anniversary of his slaying in the city.

The part of Linden Avenue will be renamed to mark the anniversary of the April 4, 1968, assassination while King stood on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel, now the site of the National Civil Rights Museum. Linden Avenue was on the route for a March 28, 1968, civil rights march led by King.

Former Memphis City Council member Berlin Boyd, who sponsored the renaming, told The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/Hiko73 ) that the effort shows the city has ended its healing process and is trying to move past the tension of the slaying.
