TBI Releases Crime on Campus Report
The director of University Relations at UT Martin is happy with the Tennessee Bureau Investigation report and credits the on-campus police for keeping the campus safe. “Public safety clears a lot of these crimes when they do happen a high percentage, so we feel like that’s a deterrent. If somebody is going to to do something that’s against the law here they’ve got a good chance of getting caught,” said Bud Grimes. Grimes said though they do have some crime on campus, it could be a lot more. To keep the numbers down, they discuss safety practices with incoming students at the beginning of the semester. “We talk to students continually to keep up with their belongings and that greatly prevents the number of opportunity thefts that we have,” said Officer Charlie Jahr. Over at Union University, the director of security said the report is on par to what they experience. He said the biggest help they could have in preventing crime on campus is the community. “If we can educate the community on if they see things that are out of the ordinary or don’t make sense…give us a call,” said Union University Director of Security, Carson Hawkins
