Youth Court
The Madison County Juvenile Court recognized the members and volunteers of “Youth Court”, Tuesday afternoon. Formally known as “Teen Court”, it is up to 47 members. The program allowed students from public, private, and home school settings to act as judge, jury, and lawyers for their peers. Volunteer attorneys acted as mentors, as the teens heard real cases in which the defendant had already pleaded guilty. Program leaders said because the juvenile defendants were being held accountable by their peers, it seemed to help them stay out of trouble. Organizers said the program was beneficial to citizens of Madison County because it cuts down on case loads, allowing more time for serious cases.
