Residents Described as Scared as Manhunt Continues
GUNTOWN, Miss. (AP) – A woman who runs a child care facility in Guntown, Mississippi, says she’s been keeping kids inside, and talking to them about avoiding strangers. Natasha McGee says “people are scared,” as the manhunt continues for a fugitive accused of kidnapping two girls and killing their sister and mother. Federal agents, state troopers and SWAT teams with high-powered rifles have made multiple trips into the woods of northern Mississippi, searching for Adam Mayes or a hideout he may have used. They say they think the missing girls, ages 8 and 12, are still with Mayes, nearly two weeks after he fled with them. Authorities have added Mayes to the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List. The reward for information leading to his arrest is now $171,000. He and his wife have been charged with murder in the deaths of Jo Ann Bain and her daughter Adrienne. Their bodies were found buried outside the Mayes home. Mayes’ wife is in custody. The suspect’s mother-in-law says Mayes believed he might be the father of the two missing girls.
