After the University of Tennessee Martin Softball team won the regular season they not only got home-field advantage for the OVC tournament but an unexpected economic boost for the City of Martin. The City of Martin is buzzing with softball fever and are welcoming hundreds of out-of-town guests. The Ohio Valley Conference Tournament started Thursday with six different teams from across the country participating. “Six teams with a travel party of roughly 25 people in each, plus their parents and fans so it’s a pretty significant boost to the local economy in terms of motels and restaurants,” said Phil Dane, UTM Director of Athletics. The Director of Economic Development said the tournament this weekend is projected to generate tens of thousands of dollars. The front desk clerk at Hampton Inn, Tammy Gross said her hotel is practically sold out for the entire weekend. “We have one room left and were sold out for tomorrow night, tonight and Saturday night,” said Gross. Martin residents said tournaments like the OVC, could encourage softball fans to come back. “Also it gives people a chance to see Martin, Tennessee and maybe come back here someday,” said Dane. The City of Martin has hosted several tournaments in the past, the last was in April.
