Daisy, a thirteen year old blood hound had a dog gone wild night. She wandered into a storm drain on the side of her house and got stuck. Kelly Whittemore is the dog owner, “We called the fire department and they came and rescued her and they were very brave and courageous and just did a wonderful job getting her out of there.” If you think this is just a happy, dog rescued story, think again. Residents in this neighborhood say they have complained to City Officials for years that a child could walk in and get trapped in the storm drain. Kelly Whittemore has four children under the age of eight years old. She wants a cap or grate put on the outside of the openings. Whittemore said, “There are several children on the street alone and this neighborhood and it’s just something we should not have to fear.” Medina Mayor Vance Coleman released this statement: “The city’s approach to the quality and effectiveness of storm water run-off systems is based on the reliance on our engineers and the subdivision developers approving and constructing structures that are consistent with systems used in any other town or city.” According to several people including Whittemore, a Medina firefighter said there should be a grate over the outside of the pipe where the dog crawled in. “In this case, the fireman was wrong,” said Mayor Coleman.
