Bethel Springs Getting New Water Meters, Residents Still Unhappy About Bills

Residents in Bethel Springs are still unhappy about their rising water bills even though officials are putting in new water meters. “You can go in Walmart, just walk by somebody and they’ll be talking about their water bill,” said Kimberly Bizzell, a Bethel Springs resident. Bizzell said the topic of water is on the minds of everybody in Bethel Springs. She said a lot of people are moving out of Bethel Springs because of the high costs. “Before the sewage even got started, our bill was $36. It went from $36 to $145 about as much as the electricity bill, which is ridiculous,” said Bizzell. Officials said the new meters will not change the cost of water for residents directly, but will lower costs for the city. Bizzell said she has her own septic tank on her property and could only imagine how much her bill would be if that was not the case. “People around here do good to pay electricity bills, but water bill that’s the same as your electricity bill that’s just…unbelievable,” said Bizzel. The city expects to have all of the new water meters installed this week. They were paid for by a $100,000 grant. Officials said the city was losing a significant amount of money due to the old meters and had to pay for the loss.
