Crockett County Deploys Smart 911

In the past, emergency personnel would have no other information than a location of the fire. With the new Smart 911, first responders will know important information. “The citizen puts in what info they share with us of course the more information the better when a life is on the line we want to know as much medical information as we can get when we send the EMS crew to you,” said Brian Black, Crockett County Emergency Director. Here is how Smart 911 works. Go to the web site, Smart 911. com, enter information about how many people live at your residence, allergic reactions, physical disabilities, and pets. “Animals come into play big in this, not many people have a way to notify that I have two dogs in my house,” Black said. According to the FCC 70 percent of 911 calls come from cell phones. Smart 911 works from cell phones, land lines, home phones. The service is not an app. The Crockett County Sheriff’s Department sees Smart 911 as a valuable tool when it comes to domestic violence. “There is a PIN number involved if they can’t give the correct pin number then we know it’s the wrong person calling,” said Detective Andrew Whitehead of the Crockett County Sheriff’s Department. Smart 911 is paid for by the Crockett County Emergency Communication District. The 911 board decided that this was a good project for the county. Best of all, tax dollars were not spent on Smart 911. “It is a time saver and it costs you nothing. It’s just a little bit of your time it could save your life at some point in time” said Black. Smart 911 is currently available in 24 states.
