Granary Bringing Jobs and Commerce to Crockett Co.
ALAMO, Tenn. – At the W.R. Russell Farms Granary, construction continues in preparation for its opening right before the upcoming corn harvest, which begins next month and run through September. Granary owner Robbie Russell said, “I just identified the demand for corn both foreign and domestic has increased over the last several years and the production has increased in this area and there wasn’t a granary in the area.” Tennessee Commissioner of Agriculture Julius Johnson was on hand for the opening of the facility, Friday. Julius Johnson said, “It’s a regional approach more competition. The more farmers products the better off the farmer is this is an additional competitor in the corn market and we see corn expanding for the next couple of years.” The plan is to unload trucks in only four minutes and get the trucks back on the road. This harvest season the granary plans to handle 900 truck loads. The location in Crockett County is close to Highway 412 and a short drive to the Humboldt railway. It’s a convenient location for the transportation of corn. Crockett County Mayor Gary Reasons said, “TDOT has worked on the project and they laid out the plans whereby it would not be a traffic problem hopefully.” In Crockett County, Haywood County and Madison County, it’s projected the planted corn acreage has increased 41 percent from a year ago. Russell said, “Most of this corn is used to feed cattle and hogs and chickens for live stock feed all over the world.”
