JACKSON, Tenn. – It was a show of red, white and blue along some West Jackson streets Wednesday morning as dozens of West Tennesseans gathered for a special celebration to kick off the holiday. This Fourth of July, residents ran proud and free with American flags for freedom. “It started off just being our small group of runners and then Facebook happened,” said organizer Scott Gatlin. Nearly 40 people gathered to run for drivers along a four mile route that included a portion of the 45 Bypass. “We just wanted to remind ourselves and remind anybody who was paying attention that today is the day to celebrate the history of our United States of America and let’s not take it for granted,” said Gatlin. Runners said they believe Independence Day is more than just grilling out and shooting fireworks. They said it is a day to honor the American flag and those who have fought, and continue to fight, for freedom. “It felt good going down the bypass with people blowing their horns,” said veteran runner Danny Crossett. “Makes you a little prouder to have served, knowing everybody shows the flag and their pride in their country.” Runners said they hope their flag run will deliver a special message to drivers who have served, or are serving, in the military. “I hope they understand that there is a huge silent majority that appreciates the service that they give us and the freedoms that they protect for us,” said Gatlin. One veteran took a moment with friends to remember some of the American privileges that Independence Day symbolizes. He believes remembering our history is what this day is all about. “We have the right to argue about our government, we have the right to criticize our government, we have the right to choose our government by the majority. Those are the things that we really need to be proud of,” said Crossett. Those who ran said they hope their event will become an annual Jackson tradition.
