Heat Resulting In More Calls To Animal Control

JACKSON, Tenn. – As the temperatures continue to rise, officers with the City of Jackson Animal Control Office have an increased work load. Animal Control Officer Whitney Owen said, “Unfortunately a lot of people don’t understand animals have the same needs as humans, only animals are even less able to cool themselves than humans are.” Owen said the number of neglect calls is up. “We’ve had a lot of neglect calls over the last month. Neighbors and citizens concerned about the animals in there neighborhood that are not being adequately maintained,” she said. “Most of the time when we arrive on scene the dog is either staked out or chained out in the middle of the yard no shade, nothing but a dog house, no water and has been like that for hours that have had to be removed,” said Owen. She says providing dogs with the shelter is not enough. “A lot of people don’t understand providing a dog house when you have 110 degree index in blazing sun, a dog house is a oven,” she explained.
