Jackson Do the Write Thing Finalist Honored in Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. – A Jackson student was recognized for an outstanding essay at an event in Washington, D.C. Marie Gaye, a Jackson “Do the Right Thing” Challenge, National Ambassador was selected to read her essay on youth violence in the nation‘s capitol during the “Do the Write Thing” Challenge National Recognition Week. Marie is a rising freshman who will be attending Madison Academic Magnet High School in the fall. She and Seth Pearson, who attends Northeast Middle School, were among more than 80 students nationwide who went to Washington, D.C., for the week. Marie wrote in her essay that, “although single-handedly defeating youth violence would be no easy feat, I take it as gospel that I can change at least one individual‘s life by eliminating youth violence.” The “Challenge” was founded and is chaired by Jackson City Councilman Ernest Brooks II. In its fifth year, over 675 students in the Jackson-Madison County School System, took the “challenge” to say no to violence in their homes, schools and communities.
