New Cameras Catching Speeders In Selmer

SELMER, Tenn. – The new handheld photo enforcement system is causing a stir in the small town of Selmer. The device is made up of two technologies a HD photo camera and a LIDAR unit. Which is like a radar gun with a camera attached. If it clocks you speeding it will instantly take a picture of the vehicle and license plate. The Selmer Police Department has been using it since May 30 and drivers in Selmer aren’t happy. “I think its stupid. It’s a machine doing a police man’s job. It seems like they’re getting too lazy to get out of there cars now a days,” said Marty Carrol. However, the Selmer Police Department said officers are not just sitting and clocking speeders. A police spokesperson said they plan to use it in areas where they receive a high number of speed complaints and around school zones. “I hate to see a child get run over. But just out here on these streets they can do their job. They can see how fast a car is going,” said Carrol. Officers said regardless of the controversy, they believe the device has modified drivers’ behavior.
