Superintendent Cancels Alumni Game

Jackson Public Schools Superintendent Cedrick Gray said an alumni basketball game he canceled Saturday was an inappropriate use of Lanier High School’s gymnasium. School security escorted a near sold-out crowd at an “old school/new school” game set for Saturday off campus an hour or so before tip-off. Gray on Monday said the game’s organizers, Lanier’s boys’ basketball booster club, had not met requirements to host the event. School policy requires an event host to file an application at least seventy-two hours in advance, have insurance coverage and pay an established fee to offset utility costs. Gray said all the requirements were not met for the event. Booster club officials say they met all requirements and called Saturday’s abrupt cancellation “embarrassing.”
