JCIL Celebrates Anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act

JACKSON, Tenn.-Hope, access, training, self-respect and encouragement are just some words found on the home page for the Jackson Center for Independent Living. Thursday, Center and community leaders and clients gathered at the facility to celebrate America’s second Independence Day. Those who gathered were celebrating the 22nd anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. ADA is a wide-ranging civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability. “It makes it where, regardless of your disability, that you have access and that you’re able to go to public buildings and public places and be able to carry on like everybody else does,” said Beth James, executive director of JCIL. JCIL is a non-profit organization operated by people with disabilities for people with disabilities. The center is designed to enable individuals to achieve maximum independence and full appreciate all aspects of community life.
