Man Charged In Coffee Cup Beating
ALAMO, Tenn. – A West Tennessee man appeared in Crockett County General Sessions Court, Thursday, charged with assaulting a man with a coffee cup. According to Alamo Police, Cornelius Johnson slammed a coffee mug over the head of another man causing severe damage to the victim’s ear. The victim also suffered cuts to his head and neck. He underwent emergency surgery and will need reconstructive surgery. Alamo Assistant Police Chief Jim Knox said, “They had been knowing each other for awhile and that he (the victim) had borrowed some money from Mr. Johnson in the past and that they got into it over the money.” According to police the attack occurred at a house on West Main Street in Alamo. At first Johnson told police that the victim broke into the house and that he was just defending himself. Police did not believe that claim. Knox said, “When we approached Mr. Johnson about what we had been told he told the truth. He told us that he was lying. The story he made up was false.” Investigators reportedly found bloody rags at the scene and took them into evidence.. According to police, shortly after the attack, cleaning supplies from the Dollar General Store were bought in an effort to clean up the blood. Johnson is charged with Aggravated Assault, Filing a False Report and Tampering with Evidence. Police were led to the weapon, the coffee mug. “[He] told us where it was at and we went out back and found it in the ditch,” said Knox. Johnson is free on $2,500 bond. He is due back in court August 30th.
