Trial Begins for Woman Accused in Sheriff’s Death

A George County sheriff’s deputy says the pickup truck that ran over Sheriff Garry Welford hit him so hard it knocked him out of his boots. Deputy Bobby Daffin testified Tuesday, as trial opened in Oxford for Brandy Nicole Williams, who is accused of driving the truck. Defense attorney Andre de Gruy told jurors that Williams made poor choices by dating a married man and by fleeing from authorities on July 21, 2010. But he said she did not mean to kill Welford. Williams is charged with capital murder but the state is not seeking the death penalty. If convicted, she would face life in prison. The man she was dating, Christopher Lee Baxter, was convicted and sentenced May 11 to life in prison.
