Woman Injured in Shooting at Best Buy

JACKSON, Tenn.- Jackson Police took an armed gunman into custody after witnesses said he shot an unidentified woman inside the Best Buy store on Vann Drive in north Jackson. Police said the armed gunman entered into the Best Buy around 10:45 a.m. then fired multiple shots at the woman in the store. Investigators revealed that the shooter and victim knew one another and added they believed the victim was the shooter’s fiance. One employee who asked not to be identified told 7 Eyewitness News that customers were terrified after the gunman walked inside the store and opened fire. “The first thing we did was just pray and make sure everything was okay and 911 was on the way. ” Police said the woman suffered multiple gunshot wounds with at least one gun shot would to her head. Police reported Wednesday afternoon that the woman is listed in serious condition in the ICU at The MED in Memphis. Customers reported hiding as the gunman paced back and forth in the center of the store while firing his weapon. After the shooting, police said the gunman dragged the woman outside to the parking lot where he was then approached by plain clothed officer Lt. John Lambert who was the first on the scene. Witnesses said the shooter then released the woman, raised the gun to his temple and asked officers to shoot him. Officers then blocked off the suspect and tased him in the parking lot. “The police first pulled up real shortly after two other policemen and kind of surrounded him,” said Bob Shelton who witnessed the scene in the parking lot. “They told him to put his hands up and lay down and he wouldn’t do it so they tased him as he went down.” People on the scene said they helped with first aid as soon as the shooter was taken into custody. “We got the first aid kit and we tried to do what we could,” said Shelton. Shoppers in the area told 7 Eyewitness News that they fear for their safety because violent shootings are happening too often in Jackson. “It’s happening in Jackson all the time,” said Wayne Cleek who was shopping in The Columns around the time of the shooting. The manager of Best Buy told 7 Eyewitness News that the store will try to reopen by Thursday. Employees who were inside of the building at the time of the shooting will be offered counseling. Police have not identified the suspect at this time. Investigators said at this point in their investigation the suspect is expected to be charged with attempted first degree murder.
