Madison County Officials Investigating Drive by Shooting

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn.- Officials with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department are investigating a drive by shooting they said happened Early Sunday morning. Deputies said an unknown gunman targeted a family in the Mercer community off Highway 138 just after midnight, Sunday morning. Investigators said an unknown man in a pickup truck, shot at a mother, son and her son’s friend were while the family pulled into their own driveway. ” It shocked me you know,” said Dave Burton, “I never would have thought it would happen to us, to my family but it did.” Although no one was hurt, neighbors said the violence terrifies them. “This is too close to home, there is too much crime coming out here into the county.” said neighbor Pamela Roaten.”In the city that’s one thing but you wouldn’t think that in the county. That’s why we moved out here was to get away from it all.” Before the shooting Burton said his wife was on the way to the store then turned around to go home in a random driveway. After she turned around victims said they noticed the truck was following them home. Burton said without warning the gunman opened fire. “He shot at them all the way down the road til they got to the driveway, even shot at them at the driveway,” said Burton.” It scared my wife to death.” Residents told 7 Eyewitness News they will live in fear until they get answers as to why this would happen to their neighbors. ” It’s absolutely ridiculous that you have to live in fear everyday that something is going to happen to one of your kids or yourself,” said Roaten. Victims said they are going to be more aware of their surroundings and take better precaution. “It’s getting to where now you got to bear arms you know to protect your family,” said Burton. Deputies said they have not yet determined a motive and their investigation is ongoing. If you have any information in this case call Madison County Sheriff’s Office or Crime stoppers.
