SAVANNAH, Tenn. – The city of Savannah’s last locally owned and operated grocery store is going out of business at the end of this week after being in the city for nearly 30 years. Foodland Market in Savannah is closing, and now will just operate out of their Scotts Hill location. Jack Wolfe has been shopping at Foodland Market since it first opened 28 years ago. You can usually find him there two-to-three times a week. “I don’t buy all that much because I live alone, but what I do buy, I try to come out here and aggravate( the store’s co-owner) Steve,” Wolfe said. But Wolfe and plenty of other loyal customers are not enough to keep the Savannah Foodland store from going out of business. The owners blame the economy, and said too many people like to eat out. “I was really disappointed,” Wolfe said. “I thought they were doing real good, but this economy, it’s kinda bad on all of us.” The owners told 7 Eyewitness News they are very upset 22 people will lose their jobs. They said they are trying to help them find other work, but it is not easy. “We love this town, and we’ve made a lot of friends in the past, and we cherish every customer we have and our employees are like family,” co-owner Steve Warren said. Warren said the one thing he will miss most about this store is the people. “Every person has a story, and they’re not just customers, they’re human beings to us and we know when they’re sick, and we pray for them.” Warren said he will cherish all of the memories at the Savannah store, which will close at 8 p.m., Saturday. He said they plan to bring all of the food to the Scotts Hill location.
