MILAN, Tenn. – A Milan police officer has been hospitalized, recovering after crashing his patrol car into a house, Thursday night. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but investigators are still trying to figure out what caused him to lose control of his car. The crash destroyed Mark Cook’s bedroom. “I came home from a break and this police car plowed through my house and was planted in my backyard,” Cook said. Milan police said Officer Oliver Mayberry was taking a break inside his patrol car, when he had some sort of medical issue, causing him to drive his patrol car across the street and into Cook’s yard. Mayberry then hit the corner of Cook’s house, and crashed into his parked car. According to police, the last thing Mayberry remembers was sitting in his patrol car in a church parking lot. Cook said his disabled mother and nephew were home at the time, and he was concerned for their safety. “It shook her up pretty good because all she heard was all the noise, the banging, and police start showing up. She still didn’t know what was going on,” Cook said. “I just freaked out, I just panicked,” said Mary Henderson, who lives next door to the wreck. “I was just scared because really I didn’t think that the loud crash was a car until I had seen it coming through. I thought it was a tornado.” Residents said they are just glad no one was hurt. “As long as he’s all right,” Cook said. “Insurance will take care of this. It’s just material.” Police told 7 Eyewitness News they do not know how long Officer Mayberry will be in the hospital. He is undergoing tests to find out what could have caused the wreck.
