Recycling Center Fire Continues To Burn

UNION CITY, Tenn. – Firefighters expect to fight a Union City blaze for a couple of days. The Greenway Recovery and Recycle Company has been burning since Thursday morning and is considered a total loss. Neighbor Theresa Colbin, drove by the fire to see the damage. “When I was at the park I could see the smoke and I could smell it,” said Colbin. Officials said the fire started in one of the main balers where cardboard and plastic are bundled and sold. Fire Chief Edminson said the drain on manpower and the lack of water are issues. Firefighters are using the “surround-and-drown” method to prevent the fire from spreading outside of the perimeter. They say it could continue to burn for days. The president of the company can not put a dollar figure on the damage but he knows there is a lot of work to be done. “This thing is probably going to burn for a few days, we got a lot of clean up to do,” said Jack Jernigan, of Greenway Recovery and Recycling.
