Finger Fire Department Gets Million Dollar Grant

FINGER, Tenn.- The city of Finger has been given a million dollar federal grant for the construction of a new fire station. Four years ago, a tornado swept through the area and did heavy damage to the fire station. The building was deemed to not be sound enough to house the fire equipment. “The shingles and the sidings all the structure of it is just rotten from the foundation up. It’s on a slab of wood itself is rotten,” said Finger resident Barry Carpenter. The grant is based on the 2008 tornado disaster relief fund. “The facility is supposed to provide adequate and efficient protection to our fire equipment,” said Finger resident Rodney Weaver. The 32 members of the all volunteer department will soon have a new home away from home. The fire station will include a safe house which will act as a shelter for the volunteers in case of a tornado. The new fire station is expected to be constructed just up the hill from the old location. Construction on the new fire station is set for spring of 2013.
