Christmas Tree Drought Impact

JACKSON, Tenn- Months after a very dry spring and summer, the drought is still affecting local farmers. Christmas tree farmer, Ray Spann of Spann’s Christmas Trees in North Jackson, has been in business for more than 20 years. The drought earlier this year stunted the growth of his trees and many other local tree owners. “The smaller trees were definitely affected,” said Spann. He attributes their lack of growth to lack of moisture. “I don’t have an irrigation system. Water is what they need.” In spite of the devastating affects, Spann says there are some Christmas shoppers looking for smaller trees. He says buying small has its perks. “If you take a really large tree, it takes a lot to put that tree up and get it into the house,” said Spann. “The smaller trees are less of a hassle.”
