JACKSON, Tenn. – Former employee of Black and Decker Mitch Miller left his job to pursue his dream of helping children. He created a shoe company that donated a pair of shoes for every pair of shoes purchased. He said he had the idea of a shoe company but wanted it to be different. “I wanted to do something different with them, so that’s where the idea of a pair for a pair came.” Fums Shoes has participated in two events in Tennessee and donated around 800 shoes. In Jackson, Fums has donated to area youth at the Exchange Club/Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Youth Town. Fums Shoes founded in 2010 is revolutionary not only because it gives away as much as it sells but because the shoes are changeable. “Our shoes are very different our shoes are very unique. We have a line of zipper shoes that are interchangeable shoes you zip off the top and can create many different looks,” he said. Such different looks that Miller does not even refer to them as a pair of shoes he refers to them as sets of shoes. Miller said he gets as much from the experience as he gives. “I don’t know how to describe it when people go on a mission and come back all glassy-eyed and saying it’s the best experience of their life…that’s what I get at everyone of these shoe distributions.” Miller said his shoes are not sold in retail stores because it is hard to find a store that shares his company idea, because it cuts into profits. But Miller said he is not motivated by profits. “Kids smiles drive me crazy I love it. I don’t care what my day or even my year is like a kids smile turns it around,” he said. Miller said his goal is to do 25 shoe distributions in the next year in all 50 states. He hopes to bring a shoe distribution to Jackson with the next 400 pair of his shoes sold.
