DYER COUNTY, Tenn.- Officials said an undercover drug operation over the weekend is responsible for taking illegal guns and drugs off the streets in Newbern. Newbern police said they found underage drinking, drugs and illegal guns inside the Douglas Cafe nightclub during a bar check that involved several law enforcement agencies. Ashley Jones, 18, said she was there visiting with friends and family during the officers’ surprise visit. “All of a sudden all these police came in with K-9 dogs and they said we couldn’t leave the club,” said Jones. During the bar check, investigators said they found several patrons without identification and guns tossed to the floor. Officials said the bust came after tips of possible drug and gang activity in the area. Police set up surveillance, then made their move with several different agencies working together. “In these situations police have to react responsibly and tactically all in the same sense,” said Investigator Rodney Wright, Newbern Police Department. Jones said the element of surprise scared her. She was transported to the hospital and treated for an asthma and panic attack. “I never saw so many police in my life have on bullet proof vests with big guns,” said Jones. “I was terrified. I was honestly scared.” Officials said each person was detained until cleared from their investigation. Wright said these procedures are important because they keep keep both officers and civilians safe. “Our main objective is to be safe and do our job and go home,” said Wright. “We have families to go home to as well and you really never know what anybody might or might not be capable of.” Jones said even thought the bar check scared her, she can respect the mandatory procedures that are in place to keep officers safe. “They was doing their job, I can say that,” said Jones. Authorities said they were able to make eight drug and weapons related arrests during their operation.
