New Locking Mechanisms Being Installed at Milan Middle School

MILAN, Tenn. – One West Tennessee school district is upgrading the security system at one of its schools, in light of Friday’s elementary school shooting in Connecticut. The Milan Special School District is adding an automatic magnetic door lock system to its middle school, since it is the only school in the district that does not have one. School officials said they want to make security at the schools more uniform. Right now, middle school visitors have to go through the front office before they can enter the main building. “The system will make the children more safe because it restricts access into the building,” said Kevin Bradford, maintenance director with the Milan Special School District. “Each access point has the magnetic door lock on the door itself. They have to be buzzed in via visual and audio inspection prior to receiving access to the building.” School officials said they will install the system at the middle school sometime in the next two weeks. They said they may look at getting school resource officers later.
