Road Workers Give Advice on How to Stay Safe in Winter Weather

JACKSON, Tenn.- Traveling through the holidays could be dangerous in West Tennessee with a winter storm expected to hit Christmas night. Workers at Mann’s Wrecker Service told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News their calls nearly triple this time of year when snow falls. “I’ve seen bad wrecks you know,” said driver Michael Dittaugh. ” I mean you can be a safe, good driver but it doesn’t matter at all.” Susan Murtaugh, who is the manager of Mann’s Wreckage Service, said drivers should take extra precautions this holiday season to avoid accidents. “It can be dangerous for you, so just slow down, take your time and be safe,” said Murtaugh. “If the weather does get bad then you could be looking at an hour sometimes two or three-hour wait.” If there is snow, officials said drivers should try and avoid back roads that are less traveled because the ice can be deceiving. “If you go on less traveled roads more than likely you’re gonna hit more ice,” said Dittaugh. “When you hit black ice, it feels like you’re driving on water. Do not hit your breaks, you can slide, go into a ditch and roll over.” Drivers should also be prepared, carrying a first aid kit, extra blankets, food and water during their travels. Murtaugh said she believes drivers should also prepare to take their time, and let other family members know when they are traveling. “Be safe and let’s all get through the holidays together,” said Murtaugh. Officials warn drivers to beware of bridges or overpasses, which can ice over easily in low temperatures. If there is an emergency and you feel unsafe, you can call your local authorities to assist.
