Mock Immunization Bill

JACKSON, Tenn. – It has been several months since a Middle Tennessee student from Dyersburg died after contracting meningitis. WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News spoke to a local college student who was so inspired that he introduced a mock bill which would require students at all universities to provide proof of meningitis immunization. The Union University student was motivated to introduce the mock bill inspired by a fellow student’s death. “I knew a lot of friends that knew him and just kinda figured this is a bill that kinda makes sense you get this vaccine it can save your life,” said Brasfield. The bill would require new students at public universities to prove they’ve had a meningitis vaccine. “It can save my life and it can save somebody else’s life so its simple and it makes a lot of sense to me to protect yourself from something as a college student your really prone to because your living really close to each other,” said Brasfield. Although Brasfield attends a private school he was impacted by the case. “Meningitis is a terrible disease you find out you have it and you might have a cold you don’t even wake up so just simply getting the vaccine can save your life very easy to get a vaccine,” said Brasfield. Students can be exempt from the vaccination for religious beliefs or through a doctor.
