New Field House Under Construction at SGCHS

MEDINA, Tenn. – Football season is still months away, but it is top of the mind in part of Gibson County. South Gibson County High School is upgrading its football facilities, which include a new field house and more room for fans. Coaches said practicing in the high school’s gym right now is like a three-ring circus. “Since we’ve been here, we haven’t had a locker room,” said Scott Sidham, head football coach. “We’ve had a small weight room that we use that we share with every other PE class and sports that’s not very big.” The school’s football, basketball and baseball teams all use their gym to practice off season, but come this fall, the football team will have their own space. “We’ll actually have a home to put all of our stuff in there, instead of just having this little shed, so it’ll be a big change for us,” said junior football player, Zac Murdaugh. The school district said the upgrade will cost about $1.5 million, which will come from the district’s budget. The improvements include a field house for the football team, and more stadium seating. Coaches said right now games are standing room only, and it is a good problem to have. “There’s more to play for,” Murdaugh said. “It makes us try harder, because we have more people to impress. We have little kids looking up to us, and we have to show them we’re not a joke.” The field house will have a coaches’ office, a weight room, and a locker rooms for the varsity and freshmen teams. “When we’ve played visiting teams, they’ve had to go to the middle school to dress, and so now they will use that freshmen locker room to be able to change right here,” Stidham said. Stidham said the improvements will not just benefit the football team, but everybody. Players agree it will boost their camaraderie. Coach Stidham said the school district is paying for everything, except for the equipment to go in the weight room. The team’s booster club will have to raise that money themselves. Their first fundraiser is a 5K run at South Gibson County High School on May 4.
