TN Leads in Gun Background Check Denials

JACKSON Tenn.- According to a report by the U.S. Department of Justice of Tennessee ranks first in the country for gun background check denials. The report shows that 4.6 percent of people’s background checks get denied, while the national average is 1.5 percent. Range USA’s Director of Training, Chip Holland, says people can be denied that shouldn’t be and the Tennessee Instant Check System can sometimes confuse similar names or birthdays. “That is what that appeal process is for and a lot of times it is just to show that wasn’t me,” said Holland. The report shows that more than half of denials win their appeals, and most gun owners say it shows that Tennessee is doing it’s job. “It’s a good thing you don’t want guns in the wrong hands,” said permit holder Joe Thompson. Gun buyer Wendy Bowen says she likes the background check process and doesn’t mind the possibility of having to fill out an appeal form, “The chance that you might have to fill out an appeal form, I don’t think that is a bad thing.” Range USA says in 2012, they only had 7 denials out of 474 background checks.
