Stress at Work Causing Health Problems

JACKSON, Tenn. – We have all been through high stress situations at work and sometimes they follow us home, but the affects it has on your health may surprise you. We all live in a non-stop work environment, but it can take a terrible toll on your body. “Stress will kill you,” said nurse practitioner Vickie Honeycutt. “We’ve said that in healthcare for years.” A new study revealed stress can increase your chance of developing heart problems by 79 percent. Many other significant medical issues can be attributed to stress as well. But a lot of what you do, or do not do, can make the affects pile on. “We don’t eat right, we don’t exercise regularly, and all of that compounds other health problems,” said Honeycutt. “So when stress kicks in and we have high blood pressure already or high cholesterol or we’re overweight, we can’t fight back.” For some, it is all about equaling everything out, and not letting work take over your life. “I try to keep a balance because it can be stressful sometimes at work,” said Tiphannie Montogomery. “But in order for you to deal with it so it won’t affect your health, go out and do something. Have fun.” Although it can be difficult, many people say the best thing you can do can do is try to leave work at the office and not bring it home with you. “Sometimes the job doesn’t completely end, but you need to get away from it,” said Honeycutt. “You need to leave it at work and enjoy you life and enjoy your family,” said Montgomery.
