Obion Co. Neighborhood Avoids Gas Explosion

OBION COUNTY, Tenn. – The Union City Fire Department and the Northwest Tennessee Disaster Services worked to put out a fire that was set just feet away from a gas pipeline Saturday. Workers tell WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News they believe someone set fire to a pile of trees, just feet from the gas pipeline and walked away. “It could have literally leveled the whole neighborhood,” said Rob Adcock, director of the Northwest Tennessee Disaster Services. Adcock said the gas pipeline runs to 25 homes in the area. “If it had gone on all night, we would have had a possibly tragic situation here,” said Adcock. Officials want this to be a lesson to always have a burn permit, something to put the flames out with, and never to leave a fire unattended. “No matter how small the fire may be when you start it, it could escalate to something completely out of control that takes a lot of people and personnel to put out just like this one,” said Adcock.
