Mayor stops probe into missing personal cash

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Knoxville Mayor Tim Burchett has quashed an investigation into cash that was missing from his office and then reappeared.

Police spokesman Darrell DeBusk told the Knoxville News Sentinel Burchett called the department Wednesday and said to discontinue the probe. DeBusk said the investigation was closed.

Burchett said the nine $100 bills were found and the matter is over.

Diana Wilson, Burchett’s chief executive assistant, was unable to get to a credit union to deposit the funds on April 1, so she said she put them in an envelope under a mat on Burchett’s desk. They weren’t there the next day and Wilson called police, who began an investigation.

Two days later, the envelope with the bills was found near a desk outside the mayor’s office.
