Worker discovers records in closed mental hospital

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – A former employee at a Knoxville mental health facility has discovered that some patient records are at the hospital even though it closed last year.

Hilda Lindeman worked at Lakeshore Mental Health Institute for 28 years. She told WBIR-TV (http://on.wbir.com/YnBF9y ) she noticed the records when she walked through Lakeshore Park and saw the door to an abandoned hospital building wide open and glass windows broken.

The records contained Social Security data, names, case numbers and birthdates, and she fears the information could be taken by someone up to no good.

The station contacted the state Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. Communications Director Michael Rabkin said the agency contacted workers in Knoxville to retrieve the documents and will look into what files are at the facility.
