JACKSON, Tenn. – West Tennessee mail carriers are reaching out to those in need, as part of the nation’s largest, single-day food drive. Mail carriers said it is their most rewarding day of the year. “I’m touched every year by the generosity and the kindness and compassion of our customers,” said mail carrier Annette Johnson. Carriers in West Tennessee and across the country are collecting non-perishable food donations along their routes for the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Proceeds in Madison County are going toward the Regional Interfaith Association. Organizers said participating in the food drive is easy. All you have to do is put your donated food items in a bag next to or inside your mailbox. “Things like canned chicken or canned tuna or pasta or rice – anything that won’t melt or spoil on the way there,” said Lindsay Dawkins, communications coordinator for RIFA. The drive is Saturday, but carriers collected some donations in advance. RIFA said the drive could not have come at a better time. “Food donations are usually low because kids are out of school, and people are on vacation, so this is a great time that we need extra food,” Dawkins said. They said even a small donation can make a big impact. “Because we serve so many boxes every day, individual homes. If every person just puts a couple of cans, the overall effect is huge,” Johnson said. Mail carriers are collecting food items on their routes, Saturday. If you do not have a carrier, you can bring your donations to the RIFA location in Jackson.
