Child Nearly Killed by Abuse Graduates Kindergarten

GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn.- The family of Austin Cash celebrated the seven-year-old reaching a once unthinkable milestone, graduating kindergarten. When Cash was just 19-months-old he was severely beaten by his father, Wesley Griffin, and step-mother, Tiffani Callahan. The pair were sentenced up to six years in prison, but are now free. Cash spent nine weeks in the hospital. Family members said the toddler nearly died from the abuse. “He’s God’s little miracle child. Doctors told us he couldn’t live much less do what he is doing now,” said great grandmother, Doris Cash. Cash’s parents said it is a miracle he is able to walk his school’s hallways everyday. “All the doctors gave up on him, and look at him today,” said mother April Ramirez as she walked with her son. Cash has overcome the odds, though he still has trouble talking, his family says they are excited to see what he will conquer next. “We’re just really proud of him, because we’ve never given up hope,” said Ramirez. Cash will start first grade at Medina Elementary in the fall.
