BROWNSVILLE, Tenn- With the threat of severe weather, Tuesday Haywood County School officials said they hope their safety plan will save students’ lives. This year the school district was awarded a grant allowing them to create tornado safe rooms at schools within the county; and with construction underway, parents said they are already feeling more at ease. “After seeing this tragedy most kids are probably scared to go to school,” said Mary Anne McCage, whose grandchild attends Haywood Elementary, the school where the first tornado safe place is being built. On Monday, a tornado hit areas in Oklahoma, including a school, killing at least nine children. “Once you hear about it somewhere it makes you wonder where it’s going to be next,” said McCage. According to the district’s deputy superintendent Vincent Harvell, these added rooms will be built at Haywood Elementary and Junior High Schools, with more to come in the future. “Any situation that threatens a kid, we certainly want to remedy it as much as we can,” said Harvell. Officials hope the first space will be completed by the start of the next school year.
